The Great Blue Heron
Hello Big Blue!
There you are down in the shallow water At the edge of the pond,Back-dropped by the cattails and cottonwoods.Your stride is long, and with every stepYour curved neck juts forward, then aft.
It takes a bit to get you up in the air:You crouch and jump,Reach for the sky,Then with the strength of Samson himselfYour two great wingsForce down the air to lift you up.
Somehow you stay aloft long enoughFor the second wing thrust. You curl your wings in toward your body,Then extend them upAnd eventually pull them downóAll as if in slow motion.
So you begin your flight.
And I marvel every time.Back
